Producers are shutting shop because Salman, SRK, Akshay are overpaid: Anurag Kashyap

Recently, Disney India and Balaji Motion Pictures drew the curtains on Hindi film production due to the losses they faced in last few years. Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, who also suffered a loss with Bombay Velvet, believes that production houses suffer loses because few producers overpay Bollywood actors such as Salman Khan, Shah Rukh, Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar.

Anurag Kashyap

Anurag Kashyap threw light on the unfair payment issue in Indian film industry. “We had four Bollywood actors (Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan, Amitabh Bachchan) in the Forbes highest paid actors whereas the rest were Hollywood actors. The films starring the Hollywood actors earn in millions and billions but ours earn at max Rs 300 crore. But still, there are Indian actors on that list. So if you see the ratio on the list, business of the film vs income of the actor, there is a huge disparity. Actors from the industry where film earns Rs 300 crore is on the list and on the other hand, there are films which earn 1.2 billion in other industries and the actors are even below our actors on the list. So I hope you got where the issue is," Anurag Kashyap said.

The filmmaker also cleared the air and said that he isn't blaming the actors but the producers who are willing to pay them such high amount for films. He added, "I am not blaming the actors for this, all the blame should be passed on to the producers as they are ready to pay the actor such high amount. Why wouldn’t the actor take that money? If someone pays me, even I would take that.”

  1. Clever analysis from Anurag sir, but the problem is also that Bollywood relies too much on those very few stars. It's all about star power, not about the quality of the content... :/

  2. Someone please tell him that Hollywood is a franchise & banner driven industry whereas Bollywood is completely a star driven industry.

  3. absolutely agree wid Anurag.. Indian film Industry can compete wid international Arena, if we stop giving so much importance on stars... We should focus on Good movies... if we start that trend, audience's perception will change slowly... people will go to see good movies, no matter who iz in there.. there have many good actors in Hindi film Industry...

  4. I think anurag still looking for scapegoat for bombay velvet's failure ,how on earth the above mentioned studios drew the curtains because of these stars .only these 4 stars gurantees success for the studios and the studios get 200 to 300 percent profit, example sultan made 600 cr gross, all these star made it to forbes due to comercial and tv program in akshays case multiple movie ,only because of this 4 star people still flock the theaters ,so find the facts first .
