2017 has not been a great year for Bollywood. The first half is gone and none of the films have even crossed 150 crores mark. The threat of Hollywood taking over Bollywood has been increasing with time as we have seen Hollywood biggies taking better opening that local films.
However, another concern is the poor performance of Bollywood films in overseas. The first half is equally bad in overseas too. So far only one film has been able to cross $10 million mark in overseas and we have big releases starring SRK, Salman Khan, Hrithik Roshan and Akshay Kumar in the first half. Here are the highest grossing Indian films of 2017 in overseas
Now check out highest grossing Hollywood films in India. This year there was only big grosser Furious 8 though most of the biggies did reasonable business and some small films also surprised.
It clearly shows that Hollywood films have taken much more from India this year as compared to Bollywood’s share from overseas. If we compare the half year data to 2016, then Bollywood films are down.
2016 (1st Half)
Last year saw the release of The Jungle Book which was a historic blockbuster. So there is no surprise that total gross for Hollywood films is less. However, in the case of Bollywood films, the performance is poor as overall business is around $5 million less. This has happened despite the fact that first half of 2017 had a big Eid release starring Salman Khan and another film by Hrithik Roshan which was not the case in 2016.
The domination of Hollywood over Bollywood will continue in the second half of 2017 which is packed with releases like Spider-Man Homecoming, Thor, Justice League, Blade Runner, and Annable Creation.
